Privacy Policy for Sky Field Notes
Last updated: October 5, 2026
This policy describes how Sky Field Notes (Android package: com.aistudio.meteoritdetector) handles information when you use the app.

Information stored on your device
The app stores observation sessions, meteor counts, fireball records, timestamps, your notes, photos, selected observing locations, coordinates you choose to save, magnetic-field measurements, app preferences in its local storage. These records support your personal observation and field journal. The app does not require an account.
Permissions
Location is used, with your permission, to select an observing location or attach coordinates to a record. You can select a city or map location manually instead. The app does not request background-location permission. Camera access is used to photograph finds. Notifications are used for reminders when enabled. Magnetic-field readings come from the phone's sensor where available.
You can revoke permissions in Android settings. Features that depend on a revoked permission may become unavailable.
Network services
Weather requests send the selected location's latitude and longitude to Open-Meteo to retrieve forecast conditions. This may be your chosen city's location or another observing location, rather than your current device location.
Map requests retrieve tiles from OpenStreetMap infrastructure. Tile coordinates indicate the map area being viewed. To obtain a place name from coordinates, the app may use Android's geocoding service and, if needed, the OpenStreetMap Nominatim service. Reverse-geocoding requests include coordinates and language preferences.
These services receive ordinary connection information such as your IP address, request time, and applicable request headers. Their processing is subject to their own policies:
- Open-Meteo: https://open-meteo.com/en/terms
- OpenStreetMap Foundation: https://osmfoundation.org/wiki/Privacy_Policy
- Android geocoding: the applicable device/platform service provider's privacy policy.
Photos and AI processing
Cloud AI photo analysis is not configured by default. Camera access lets you save photos in your local journal; granting camera permission does not itself upload photos. No photos are sent for AI analysis while no AI server is configured. If you manually configure an external AI server and confirm a submission, selected photos, your accompanying note, language preference, and a prompt-version identifier are sent to that server. Prepared photos are re-encoded to remove embedded EXIF metadata, including GPS metadata, but visible details and information in your note remain. Your journal and stored coordinates are not automatically attached. The server operator may forward submissions to an AI provider, such as Google Gemini; that operator’s and provider’s privacy policies and retention practices apply. Do not submit sensitive information. We do not currently provide an active cloud AI service. Before introducing a developer-operated cloud AI service, we will update this policy and the relevant in-app disclosures.
Sharing
Records are not automatically published. When you choose to share a card, it is provided to the app or recipient you select. Precise coordinates are hidden on share cards by default; you can change that setting. Shared copies are subject to the recipient's practices.
Advertising and analytics
The app version covered by this policy does not include advertising or analytics SDKs. It does not use an advertising identifier for tracking. The developer does not sell your journal data.
Retention, backups, and deletion
Local records remain in app storage until removed. You can remove records using available journal controls. To remove all app-local data, use Android's Clear storage/Clear data option or uninstall the app. Deleting a journal entry alone may not remove all associated files, so clearing app storage is the appropriate option for complete local removal.
Android backup and device transfer are enabled in this version. Depending on your device and backup settings, app data may be included in cloud backups or transferred to another device. Manage or delete backups through your Android or backup-provider settings; clearing local storage does not necessarily delete existing backups. Restoring a backup may restore app data.
Copies you shared, saved outside the app, or submitted to an external service are not removed by deleting local records. External-service retention and deletion are governed by the relevant provider. Contact us for questions about information you have sent directly to the developer.
Security
The app uses Android's app storage protections. Weather and OpenStreetMap requests use HTTPS. No method of transmission or storage guarantees absolute security.
Children
The app does not knowingly collect children's personal information on a developer-operated server. If you believe a child has sent personal information directly to us, contact us so that we can address the request.
Contacting us
If you email us, we receive your email address and any information you include. We use that information to answer your request and retain correspondence only as necessary to handle it and meet applicable legal obligations. You can request deletion by emailing us. Please do not include unnecessary sensitive information.

Changes and questions
We may update this policy when the app or its data practices change. The revised policy will show a new updated date. For privacy questions or requests concerning data you sent to the developer, use the privacy contact listed above.
